Separate package to revive handloom sector mooted

Decline of handloom and handicraft sector has prompted Minister of State for Commerce, Jairam Ramesh on Wednesday, to offer a separate package to revive the industry in Budget.

Revival of handloom sector depends on financial restructuring to ensure that credit flow gives maximum benefit to artisans and weavers, said Ramesh.

The needs of the sector are very less compared to agriculture and other sectors, said Ramesh.

This year's budget allowed farmers not to pay more than 7 percent interest and the same should be permitted for weavers, Ramesh said.

Handloom and handicrafts sector is second largest employment provider after agriculture, he said.

Government should focus on such employment generating industries instead of dollar generating ones.
