Govt's initiative for cotton industry's revival begins

In line with Government's commitment to revive cotton industry, shilling250 million has been budgetted for the purpose, Minister Kipruto arap Kirwa revealed Friday.

World Bank released shilling288 million to support government's revival effort, the Minister revealed in a speech read on his behalf by Agriculture Secretary Dr Wilson Songa, during official launch of Mwea Cotton Promotion Project in Kirinyaga district.

Government has employed 300 extension workers along with a team of officers from Trade Cooperation and Agriculture Ministry to work with cotton farmers for this, the Minister informed.

Kenya sold cotton apparels worth shillings18 billion with AGOA initiatives last year.

It helped provide employment opportunities to over 25,000 workers in 25 industries dealing in cotton textiles.

Government's value adding effort to produce quality competitive products for export will benefit almost 11,000 cotton farmers, he promised.
