Proposed budget for 2006-07 has withdrawn duty on machinery to set up effluent treatment plant and hence leaving little scope for Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) and Bangladesh Knitwear Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BKMEA) to oppose this budget.

However, the two associations were not fully satisfied as some of their recommendations neglected in budget.

BGMEA urged for more provisions for the power and energy sectors, since any extension of present power crises would certainly impede production and investment in the garment industry.

It also requested the government to allow duty free import of machinery and some spare parts, continue the cash incentive package for another five years and provide the tax holiday facility in the garment sector.

BKMEA also demanded that special fund should be allocated to flourish knitwear sector as government has not provided any tax holiday to this profit-making segment.
