Cloth production through handloom sector has dropped 13 percent due to continuous downslide of the sector.
A veil surrounds the sector which has not undergone official census to reveal its state since the last one was conducted in 1995-96.
There were 3.29 million looms in the country and 6.5 million weavers but in reality, as of today the situation is dismal.
This also bears on the policy-making process and the Finance ministry has induced further problems by not releasing funds required for conducting the much required census.
Lack of good mechanism to gauge the production level in the looms makes the government figures on the handloom sector's productivity very uncertain.
Government depends on the conversion ratio for calculating handloom production from the overall cloth production statistics.
This further makes Government job complex while examining other viabilities of its schemes, vital to protect handloom industry from collapsing.
Handloom sector continues to be stressed under competition from the power loom sector.
There are nearly 4,600,000 looms in the world and India has almost 3,900,000.
If this continues then the lives of workers dependant on the handloom industry will be destined to end up in pennury.
