National Environmental Engineering Research Institute (NEERI) is gearing up to conduct a two months study, specially developed to offer a work plan that covers almost all the issues that are currently plaguing the textile industry of Tamil Nadu.
Union Environment and Forest Ministry requested the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) to sponsor this project that will help enterprises to abide by the environmental norms.
Talking to the media, Nalini Bhat, Ministry Director, stated, “While a road map is available for tanneries in the form of a detailed project report, the dyeing units have yet to prepare a comprehensive action plan indicating approximate funds requirement of the sector for upgradation of common effluent treatment plants and for establishments of new ones with reverse osmosis, nano filters and multi-effect evaporators."
Bhat also informed that the total investment for this program will come up to Rs500 crore.
Sources from Union Minister for Environment and Forests also reported that the dyeing firms desperately needed guidance to stick to the environmental standards so that they are not forced to shut down their business.
The Planning Commission has approved a plan which allowed the State and the Ministry each to offer 25 percent of the total project cost as grant.
However, textile industry is demanding atleast 75 percent funds and the State and the Ministry will need to draft a package that is agreeable to all stakeholders.
