Department of Textile Development and Ministry of Textile Development has jointly launched a handloom development project to produce value added handloom products and to acquire bigger ventures not only within Sri Lanka but also in the overseas markets.
The Ministry desires to develop handloom sector as a self-employment project, create it as a recognized industry through this programme since it is very popular among housewives, providing additional income to them.
Department of Textile Development has opened 15 handloom-training centers in Central, Western, and Southern provinces to train school leavers and housewives on value-added handloom products.
Government desires to popularize it and bring an end to rural poverty under the President's vision.
On completion of six-months training session, the Department of handloom industries would assign handloom-weaving machines and provides raw materials under a concessionary plan to the trainees.
The government Institutions will place their handloom orders, specially curtains, office linen materials and required products directly on these trainees.
Since bridal ware is presently highly popular and fast growing, many handloom weavers have commenced weaving them to earn more.
