Pakistan plans to have FTA with Jordan

The government on Monday proposed to Jordan for initiating dialogue on Free Trade Agreement (FTA) to boost bilateral trade. To improve further economic, social and technical relations, during the Eighth Pak-Jordan Joint Ministerial Commission (JMC), to conclude on Tuesday.

The signing of Memorandum of Understandings (MoUs) regarding co-operation in the fields of agriculture, trade, industry, public works and housing, science and technology, petroleum and natural resources, IT and promotion and protection of investment is expected.

During the inaugural session of JMC, Commerce Minister Humayun Akhtar said that the meeting was a step forward in the direction which would lend substance and content to bilateral relations and provide an institutional framework to adequately address those obstacles which impeded the economic and commercial ties.

After the inaugural session, Humayun proposed the FTA when the Minister for Planning and International Co-operation of Jordan, Ms Suhair Al-Ali, called on him in his office.
In response to the proposal, Suhair assured Humayun that her government would be happy to start the negotiations as soon as possible. She also invited him Minister to lead a delegation from Pakistan to complete the FTA.

The Commerce Minister suggested that initial dialogue may be started by the technical teams of the two countries and, when they reached the final stage of the agreement, he would like to come to Jordan for signingof this bilateral FTA.
