West Bengal Govt worried over silk flow from China

Reopening of Nathula yesterday, compelled a worried Minister for Cottage And Small-Scale Industries, Manab Mukherjee to seek modernization of silk industry in West Bengal to fight off competition from China.
China accounts for 78 percent of the world silk trade and can simply overwhelm the state's markets with its cheap and bulk availability of silk.
West Bengal government has appointed Webcon to examine on modernization of the silk industry and restructuring of silk trade, right from cultivation and weaving, to marketing.
Stste government is also actively evaluating the report of Webcon suggesting an investment of Rs161 crore for modernization of the silk industry.
