On the other hand, cheaper products would become more available to local consumers and the deal doesn't promote the tourism and construction services where Egypt has comparative advantages.

Another country and trade partner on the way to joining the EU is Croatia, a gateway for Egyptian goods into Central and Eastern Europe (CEE).

The Croatian government hopes to be a part of the EU by 2009.

Croatia imported $6.1 million in Egyptian goods, mainly in vegetables, crude minerals, and textile yarn and it exported $16.2 million in goods to Egypt, mainly in wood, paper and electricity infrastructure and above all Egyptians will be aware of popular Croatian foodstuffs including Kras chocolate and Podravka soups and spices.

On becoming a part of the EU would help Croatia improve its business standards and bring them up to EU standards, thus increasing investments and trade with countries like Egypt, as Croatia would adopt the European trade model and open up its market.

Croatia's GDP grew at a rate of 3.7 percent by mainly exporting transport equipment, wood, textiles, chemicals, foodstuffs and fuels which totaled $7.85 billion and its imports topped $16.7 billion, mainly in machinery, transport and electrical equipment, chemicals, fuels and foodstuffs.

Egypt has presently no plans to negotiate any free-trade agreement with Croatia in the near future, but if Croatia joins the EU, the same laws ruling trade between Egypt and the EU would automatically incorporate Croatia as well.
