Kerala students to wear handloom uniforms

Finally, fortune has smiled on Kerala's ailing handloom industry as the Government is introducing handloom-made uniforms once a week from next year in state-run schools.

Initially, the scheme is limited to the 1.7 million students in Government schools. Subsequently, it will be joined by Government-aided schools that have more than three million students.

If this scheme proves to be a success, then the handloom sector with 200,000 people will flourish well in future.

The annual production in the handloom industry has been somewhere in the region of 60 million meters for a few years. Most of the looms are concentrated in Thiruvananthapuram and Kannur districts of the state with around 50,200 looms.
