Minister of Handloom, Jayatissa Ranaweera wants to take handloom industry one step further with the help of local and international experts.
Ranaweera wishes to install advanced technology to improve productivity as well as alleviate problems faced by handloom workers.
Minister invited Indian company to launch new handlooms named TARA, informed Ranaweera at opening ceremony of Lunugamwehera and Debarawewa Handloom development centers.
He urged the people to use domestically manufactured textile to reduce imports of textile and as a result it will improve condition of handloom weavers.
In near future, power looms will be set up to meet the demand of textile sector as seventy-two power looms had to close down due to privatization.
Government will help local investors who wish to open power looms in the country, Ranaweera stated.
