To destroy the smuggled goods from the country, Nigeria Custom Service (NCS) has burnt seized textile materials, which were worth billions of naira at the Seme border.

Even though the entire episode was performed amid tight security, it drew severe criticism from public. The operation saw the presence of many top level officials at the scene.

The officials explained that Badagry was chosen as the location for exercise because of its proximity to Atlantic Ocean. Replying to allegations that custom officials used to steal the goods, the officials told that Seme border was still found comfortable and safe.

Custom officials have reaffirmed their commitment to get rid of this menace as they explained that it is their primary responsibility to free the country of smuggled goods from neighbouring countries.

A general poll criticized the Government decision to burn the goods and suggested that they should have been distributed among the poor strata of the society. Experts have also asked the Government to strengthen border fences to avoid such situations.
