First Deputy Minister for Foreign Affairs Le Cong Phung has urged member nations of United Nations General Assembly to support and assist developing countries to enter the World Trade Organisation (WTO) at the earliest.

He said that it was imperative for the accomplishment of Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) that developing countries are integrated with the world economy at a faster pace.

Phung was concerned that failure of Doha round will only help in the protective policies of developed nations and in the instability of oil and gold prices.

He sited the anti-dumping tariffs imposed on Vietnamese catfish, shrimp and footwear during last one year as an example of protectionism which has badly affected millions of poor people. He termed them as violations of WTO rules.

He severely criticized the tariffs in the pretext of hygiene and safety standards as mere excuses to bar the developing nations from accessing developed markets.
