Crucial vote on the imposition of anti-dumping tariff on leather and footwear imported from China and Vietnam has been deferred by European Union (EU) member countries and the final decision on the same will be now be taken on October 5, 2006.

Even countries like Austria which earlier opposed the anti-dumping tariff, have softened their stance as they proposed it for one in place of five years, originally mooted.

However, this has been vehemently opposed by importers and distributors belonging to the European Union. Temporary tariffs imposed earlier, are scheduled to lapse on October 6, 2006.

France had suggested that tariff should apply for two years subject to adjustment thereafter even as several EU member countries oppose imposition of anti-dumping tariff on leather footwear originating from Asian countries.

Meanwhile, Vietnam and China have out rightly rejected imposition of anti-dumping duties saying it is just an act of protecting themselves.

Last year, 1.25 billion pair of China-made shoes sold in EU market, which reresents about half of its total consumption. Vietnam on the other hand, exported 265 million pairs of shoes to EU.
