Democrats in South Australia have questioned the wisdom of growing cotton which is high on water intake in the dry region.

Area under cotton production has grown by 50 percent to 314,000 hectares during 1994 to 2004 period. Democrats have put question mark on the cotton expansion saying that it is unwise to grow cotton in area where there is scarcity of water as cotton needs water in huge quantity.

It is estimated that cotton consumed 20 percent of water from Murray Darling Basin while it had three percent share in Australia's exports employing three percent of Australia's agricultural workers.
