President of Synthetic & Art Silk Mills Association (SASMA), V.S. Chalke has urged Government to treat synthetic fibres and readymade garments as sensitive commodities and put up a monitoring and safeguarding mechanism to protect them.

He also advocated the continuation of specific duty on cheap fabric import from abroad. This measure has been suggested by KSA Technopack as well to save the small local enterprises.

Recent years have seen huge jump in the import of synthetic fabrics and readymade garments. Total textile import in 2005-06 was US$2699.2 million which was a surge compared to $2266.15 million in 2004-05 and $2034 million in 2003-04. It shows jump of 33% over the two years period which is a worrying trend for powerloom sector.

While there is anti-dumping duty on the import of raw-materials of synthetic textiles, there has been no duty imposition on synthetic textile import. Chalke informed that there has been slump in the export of synthetic fabrics of 15.01% in Rupee term.

The export of polyester filament fabric has gone down by 31.19% at Rs802.18 crore whereas the export of polyester cotton fabric and nylon filament fabric slumped by 10.75% and 34.50% respectively.

He reasoned that decline in exports was a result of international competition and Indian products were not of standard. He asked the Government to bring in quick measuresto supply raw materials to exporters at international prices. If steps are not taken, exporters and finally powerloom weavers will be in dire straights.
