Government has ordered Karnataka state-level panel to investigate small-scale industries (SSIs) in all the 29 districts and report about its exact condition.
Karnataka has made it its mission to enhance the SSI sector in the state that includes about eight lakh firms with labour of nearly 30 lakh workers.
Small Scale Industries Association President R Prithviraj, informed that SSIs manufacture products worth Rs64,000 crore annually, generating over Rs27,000 crore of foreign exchange through exports.
Of the 2800 commodities produced, Karnataka tops other states in garments, information technology, machine tools and accessories, electronics, pharmaceutical and auto components.
In past ten years the SSI sector has been struggling with several problems with lack of financial and technological resources, forcing administration to take aggressive steps.
Earlier, government would auction available factory sites when only the wealthy businessmen could grab them, and those with real potential and not enough fiscal aid lost.
However, now the Government is thinking about distributing these locations after careful evaluation of one's credentials.
RC Purohit, President, Federation of Karnataka Chamber of Commerce and Industries (KERC), backed this proposal and said, “This move has really encouraged the SSI sector, but the government should ensure that all electricity supply companies implement KERC's order in stipulated time.”
