Recognising the problem of inadequate depth of ports in country, Government proposes to set up a modern deep-sea port.
For this reason most of Indian cargo are being transshipped to Singapore, Dubai and Colombo. Work have started for deepening of channels and construction and upgradation of berths as well as more container terminals in 12 major ports in the country.
The Paradip port on the east coast is to be deepened to 17.1 metres from the present 12.8 metres at a cost of Rs235 crore to make it the deepest port in the country.
A Rs7,000 crore modern deep-sea port off West Bengal coast has been proposed by the government as part of its Rs55,000 crore plan to double port capacity in the country to 1,000 million tonne by 2012.
