First SEZ of country ready to function

Government has readied the first Special Economic Zone (SEZ) at Bhairahawa. Officials of SEZ Project, a branch of Ministry of Industry, Commerce and Supplies (MoICS) informed that the SEZ will open on Government's instructions.

Deepak Bhattarai, Senior Engineer of SEZ Project, stated that building of necessary infrastructure and basic services is over and they are ready to give possession of processing space to industries.

He added that project office has divided 20 bigahs of land into seven plots, constructed roads to all plots and extended telecommunication lines. Government has invested Rs107 million in this project.

Entire development cost for the SEZ was approximated to be Rs512.40 million in 2004. Government had bought total 50 bigahs of land for Bhairahawa SEZ and it has been developing the SEZ in phases due to limited resources.

Government has promised 50 percent budget exemption to industries functioning in this SEZ for current financial year, to attract industries to the zone.

Government opines that 15 kinds of industries including agriculture, textiles and apparel can successfully run production activities in the SEZ aiming at Indian markets.

Hridayesh Tripathi, Minister for Industry, Commerce and Supplies, informed that Finance Ministry had consented on many rebates proposed by MoICS for SEZ industries.
