Atrocious condition of foreign labourers

The textile and clothing labourers from China, India, Bangladesh and Srilanka who are staying in Mauritius as workers, have a very vulnerable condition.

Mauritian law gives very little legal protection to these workers and those who protest for their working and living conditions are deported from the island state to their native countries.

The daily working hours for these workers stretch from 8.30 am to 11 pm, with only two half-an-hour breaks in between. Foreign workers' dormitories are so overcrowded that they have to keep their clothes under the bed or hanging from the walls.

The Government has no legal framework to protect foreign workers, as they get pressurized by the private sector.

Since March 2005, the Chinese and Indian embassies have stopped giving shelter and intervening on behalf of its nationals who take part in demonstrations or have problems with their employers.

Mauritian workers criticise foreign workers for accepting low wages. About 50,000 local workers are unemployed. The presence of foreign workers is making Mauritian locals unhappy.
