National Assembly's standing committee on textile recommended the Government to restrict conversion of cotton growing into sugar growing areas and setting up of sugar mills.

After detailed dialogues, Cotton Standardization (Amendment) Bill, 2006 was passed in complete agreement.

The Secretary Textile Industry told Committee that according to Cotton Standardization ordinance declared in 2002, Pakistan Cotton Standards Institute was under the administrative control of the Ministry of Food, Agriculture and Livestock.

He further added that due to amended Rules of Business and establishment of Ministry of Textile Industry, it will be having control over administration of Pakistan Cotton Standard Institute.

He also suggested minor changes in section 5 (1) (b) and section 5 (2) of the ordinance so that it can help in smooth running of official business of Pakistan Cotton Standard Institute.

Committee raised its concern about overall cotton situation in Pakistan and also advised to change old procedures used by industry, to upgrade machinery installed in the ginning factories and to provide uniform cotton seeds approved by the concerned department of agriculture to the growers for specific areas.
