Ministry plans long term strategy for textile industry

A meeting related to problems and appraisal of textile industry was held on December 20, 2006.

The meeting chaired by Minister for Textile Industry, Mushtaq Ali Cheema, was also attended by dignitaries like Federal Minister for Commerce Humayun Akhtar Khan, Akram Sheikh Deputy Chairman Planning Commission, Tariq Ikram Chief Executive Officer Trade Development Authority of Pakistan and high-ranking officials.

Due to lack of competitive edge in global market, need for efficiency in production, cost effectiveness and cost competitiveness were emphasized in the meeting.

Udo Hartmann, an industry expert from Gherzi International, Switzerland made a presentation in the meeting.

A detailed analysis focusing on strengths and weakness of ginning, weaving, spinning and garment sectors took place and came up with solution of long-term strategy on the basis of macroeconomic, financial and institutional framework as well as international competitiveness scenario.
