Govt undertakes Bamboo Mission to expand exports

Agriculture Ministry has decided to strengthen bamboo industries, inturn developing handicraft sectors and generating further employment opportunities.

India has the largest bamboo forests in the world and is second only to China in bamboo product varieties. Recognizing this potential, Government has decided to invest Rs500 crore in five years to introduce National Bamboo Mission.

Under this scheme, over 200 Bamboo Bazaars will be organized. Research proves that if proper steps are taken, bamboo sector can create 50.4 million mandays on 1.76 lakh hectares over five years.

Significant number of skilled and unskilled laborers will get placements in handicraft industry.

The mission's programmes on research, plantation development, handicrafts development and marketing will be specific to the regions concerned and States.

Statistics reveal that China annually earns upto US $500 million from bamboo exports. India also plans to grab major share of $10 billion export market.
