Textile Ministry will set up five new cotton fibre testing labs at Faisalabad, Sahiwal, Hyderabad, Bahawalpur and Dera Ghazi Khan. Four such laboratories already exist in the country.

Mushtaq Ali Cheema, Federal Minister for Textile Industry, made this announcement yesterday, meeting with the senior officers of the ministry. These labs will support growers and ginners in their activities and also help in improving cotton quality.

Modern high volume instruments (HVIs), capable of evaluating fibre properties of cotton such as staple length, grade, strength and micronaire, will be supplied to the labs.

Government will provide funds in current fiscal for completion of installation work in the labs prior to next cotton season in 2007-08.

Pakistan Cotton Standards Institute has been assigned to develop the laboratories, which could require an investment of Rs68.86 million.
