In past year or so suicide rate among farmers drastically went up, especially in the state of Maharashtra.

Around 5,000 farmers have killed themselves over six years across India.

Recently, Asian Development Bank granted a loan of US $1 billion to improve India's rural credit structure.

The Bank hopes that this step will curb the suicide rate and encourage the farmers.

This project covers five states and targets rural sectors, especially smaller farmers.

Experts believe that development of rural infrastructure and connecting farmers to markets directly will be crucial steps to bring this problem under control.
