KANCHEEPURAM:

Tamil Nadu's handloom weavers were disappointed with its Budget for 2007 - 2008 as their vital demands had not been considered sympathetically.

Weavers, represented by Tamil Nadu Handloom Weavers Federation said that important demands which include waiving of Rs330 crore cooperative loans were ignored even when the matter had been put up directly to Chief Minister Karunanidhi.

Waiving of loans would have given a new lease of life to nearly 1,232 cooperative organizations and nearly 2 lakh weavers would have retained their employment, the federation said.

Weaver's pension was hiked from Rs200 to 400 and should be implemented soon, as last year's hike is yet to be given.

Proposed hike is applicable to weavers of cooperative sector only. It should be extended to nearly 50,000 weavers of private sector also, the federation said.
