Struggling textile industry is praying to get encouraging concessions from the 2007-08 budget. Sources say that many medium-sized enterprises and weavers are optimistic and believe that the Government will surely announce relief package for the sector.
Recently, the issue of import through Wagha border has also come into spotlight. Industry is aggressively demanding approval to enable cotton import.
Since Government has permitted the 15-20 major textile enterprises to import extra-long-staple-cotton (ELS) from India via land, there is tremendous frustration in the industry.
Importing through sea route increases the cost and hence, smaller players cannot afford to purchase ELS.
Analysts say that considering the situation, SMEs should be provided better concessions in budget, which let them acquire ELS, in turn boosting the product quality.
Shortage of trained labor has hit the industry hard and experts urge the Government to focus on this matter and form policies to enhance labour skills.
