Showing concern over the state of US textile industry and North Carolina's in particular, US Senator Elizabeth Dole, R-NC, has advised US Trade Representative Rob Portman to handle the issue without making any compromise during the Doha round of World Trade Organization talks.
In a letter to Portman, Dole expressed her views stating, "It is my hope that you will be able to lower export barriers for US-produced textiles, and only permit for US tariffs to be reduced on a reciprocal basis."
Besides, Dole also sought continuation of devices currently in operation to avoid market disruptions among other issues. She asked that options for implementing textile tracer technology be maintained.
In her letter she also appraised Portman of her concerns for farmers and manufacturing companies.
