Calling textile sector the backbone of country's industries, Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz said that government will take steps to retool and reform by adopting the best management practices.

He said the government is chalking out various strategies to improve the textile sector's position in the global arena.
Aziz said this while speaking to a delegation of Pakistan Bedwear Exporters' Association (PBEA) today.

He further said that textile sector had significantly developed in the past few years as its contribution to the country's exports stood at 66 percent. While it employed 40 percent of the total workforce, its input to Pakistan's GDP stood at 8.5 percent.

Aziz said that while this growth was largely driven by healthy Government policies, positive macroeconomic indicators, lower interest rates, increased market access and so on, a lot had to be done to increase workers' skills, promote research and development activities, facilitate women employees and make procedures simpler.

Lastly, he said the Government is also making focused efforts to improve infrastructure so that cost of production may be lowered.
