Puducherry sanctions VAT amendment bill 2008

The Puducherry Value Added Tax (VAT) 2008, finally got sanctioned on January 4, receiving unanimous consent of the Assembly members.

The Bill was essentially proposed in the legislature with a view to exempt certain products from the ambit of tax.

The list of goods exempted in the first schedule of Puducherry Value Added Tax Act, 2007 remained intact while a few other items were included in them.

Some of these items include handicrafts, jamakalams, saree falls, lace, ribbons, footwear costing less than Rs200, and bandage cloth.

Additionally, the amendment would also exempt bagasse and textiles from the purview of VAT.
