US & China to talk over textiles again

A trade delegation led by Deputy Director of the Foreign Trade Department, of the Ministry of Commerce, from China, Sun Jiwen will visit Washington during September 26-27, to conduct negotiations over the prickly issue of textile quotas with the team led by special negotiator from the US Trade Representatative's Office, David Spooner, media reported.

The talks will be fifth in the series beginning June, this year, involving the two countries so far, that remained inconclusive at solving the textile imbroglio of the unrestricted imports of cheap Chinese apparels and textile as claimed by the US textile industry to harm local industry and job losses.

Since January this year, when the WTO imposed textile quotas were removed, US imports of Chinese T-shirts, trousers, innerwear and other clothing surged up to 1500% in certain categories.

The US manufacturers led by associations like AMTAC, NTCO and others vociferously and successfully lobbied to cap the Chinese textile imports in ten categories. Nine more categories are under investigations, and in all likelihood, to come through, as the US imports data reveals.

On the other hand US Association of Importers of Textiles and Apparel is fighting to get in Chinese textiles, as they are cheap against indigenously manufactured products.

With the successful conclusion of Sino-EU agreement over unblocking of Chinese clothing in Europe, an air of expectancy and hype is being generated around the forthcoming talks, now.
