Trade Act Bill will boost textile & apparel exports from Bangladesh

Bangladesh Foreign Minister M Morshed Khan was assured support by US Senator Lincoln D Chafee, Chairman of the Senate sub-committee for Near East and South Asia of the Foreign Relations Committee, towards realign the TRADE Act Bill in the US Senate.

Chafee told Khan that he is a supporter of free trade when the later met the Senator at his Senate office in Washington DC, Thursday.

TRADE Act of 2005, a bill in the making proposes duty-free access for textile and other products from 14 Asia-Pacific LDCs including Bangladesh.

Key Senators have extended their support and reports suggest that the prospect of the bill passing through is bright.

Stating the importance of duty-free access for textile products from Bangladesh, the Foreign Minister said textile industry was crucial for economy of Bangladesh.

He also added that readymade garment industry employs over 1.5 million female workers and played an important role in women empowerment.
