The State of Kansas hosted a trade delegation from Taiwan visiting the United States to complete a trade agreement with American beef producers worth more than $420 million – nearly $130 million with Kansas alone. The agreement will see between 5 and 6 million pieces of American wet salted and wet blue cattle hides sold to Taiwanese tanneries between January 1, 2006 and December 31, 2007.
Howard Fricke, Secretary of the Kansas Department of Commerce said that this is an enormous opportunity for the Kansas beef industry and the entire state economy. The agreement is mutually beneficial to their Kansas hide producers and to Taiwan's tannery industry. More importantly, this is another example of what a wonderful trade relationship and friendship Taiwan and Kansas have developed in recent years.
Kansas Lieutenant Governor John Moore welcomed the Taiwan Agricultural Trade Goodwill Mission – two hide importers and one representative of the Taiwan Regional Association of Tanneries – in the State Capitol Building for an official welcome and signing ceremony. Tsong-Ming Wang, the deputy chairman of the Association, signed the agreement along with Kansas beef industry representative Todd Johnson.
The three-member delegation will visit a Topeka-area hide facility on Tuesday and tour the Capitol and Kansas History Museum on Wednesday. In addition to Kansas, the Taiwan Trade Goodwill Mission visited Washington, D.C. and Texas to demonstrate their continuing goodwill and willingness to purchase U.S. hides and skins.
