Special Study Group on Textile Sector presents report to Govt

On June 17, 2005, the Board of Trade, Ministry of Textiles, Government of India constituted 5 working groups and 4 special study groups under the Chairmanship of Mr A Shaktivel, Chairman, AEPC as Convener and Chairmen of The Cotton Textiles Export Promotion Council and the Synthetic and Rayon Export Promotion Council as members of the group.
Several industry experts and Government official from the textile industry were also co-opted in the group to evaluate the problems and prospects of the industry.
On September 29, 2005, the Group submitted the issues it identified and recommendations on the following points:
Issues:
- Raw material availability
- Machinery availability
- Uncompetitive cost of land, power, credit etc
Recommendations:
- It called for improving the quality of cootn
- Source raw materials are competitive prices
- Encourage Manmade Fibre sector through lower duty structure
- Provide level playing field to mills and provide assistance
under TUF scheme
- To encourage textile machinery manufacturers to manufacture
world-class machinery
- Turn textile industry in to an export oriented one
- Improve labour laws and compensation for providing skills
to untrained manpower
