The textile and tannery industry is considered to be one of the most polluting from amongst all sectors in the globe. Both these sectors have now become the target for the National Environmental Standards and Regulations Enforcement Agency (NESREA).
At a meeting of the stake holders from the textiles and tanneries sector, the Director General of NESREA, Ms Benebo, described both the sectors as worst culprits in discharging untreated pollutants and hence polluting surface and ground water resources.
She said that on a recent visit by agency officials to four units to check out the preparedness of these units considering the deadline of May 6 to comply with the environmental laws, unfortunately met with an utter surprise.
She added, “None of the four tanneries complied with the directives and instead of using functional treatment plants, are still releasing the untreated effluents in to the environment bypassing the treatment plant by giving excuses of electricity shortage.
She had a note of warning when she said that this is very unethical and constitutes as an environmental crime and said the agency wanted to cooperate with these two sectors to bring down the environmental pollution and adhere to standards.
