Cotton output up at 3.8mn tons

As against last year cotton ouput has been recorded at 3.8 million tons of cotton in Uzbekistan.

Last year only 3.77 million tons was picked, which is 6.5% less than in 2005, informs Uzbekistan Agriculture and Water Management Ministry reports.

Level of cotton procurement, the ministry states remained at the level of 2004 and accounted for 50 percent of its actual production.

With favorable climate and abundant rainfall and substantial stores of melt waters in the mountains, sources say higher cotton production is forecast.

Records prove that Uzbekistan is the second largest exporter of cotton fiber in the world producing 1 million tons for export per year and is also a major foreign currency earner.

Companies from Russia, Turkey and France order Uzbek cotton in large quantity, they said.
