Acknowledging the textile riches of the South Asia region, Indian Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh suggested setting up of a SAARC Museum of Textiles and Handicrafts.
He was speaking at the SAARC Summit concluded in Dhakka recently, where he said, “South Asia possesses a very rich and living tradition of exquisite handicrafts and textiles. Each member country has its own unique culture and distinctive craft traditions. India will be happy to preserve and foster this valuable legacy by establishing a SAARC Museum of Textiles and Handicrafts.”
He enlisted activities to be carried out by the Museum which could include training of craftspersons, foster design skills, hold promotional events such as fashion shows and demonstrations by artisans, and also undertake research.
Besides, on the commercial front, Singh proposed opening of retail outlets in each of the member country's captal to promote textiles and handicrafts region-wise.
