DK Nair, secretary general, Confederation of Indian Textile Industry stated that this would prohibit the country (the beneficiary of such RTA/PTA) to source products from India for re-exports after value addition. He also pointed at the existing tariff barriers.
The basic customs duty in textile items is 15% compared to US tariff line between 16-32 percent.
Having a developing nation status under WTO we are entitled for special and differential treatment,” he added. Despite all odds, India has been able to maintain number two position in global textile trade after China.
Mr Nair stated that in the years to come, they will be able to enhance their competitiveness even further.
