Secretary (Revenue), Ministry of Finance, Sanjay Malhotra will replace Shaktikanta Das as the new Governor of the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) with effect from December 11, 2025.

The six-year tenure of Das, the second-longest serving RBI Governor, will end on Tuesday.

“The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet has approved the appointment of Sanjay Malhotra, IAS (RJ: 1990), Secretary, Department of Revenue, as Governor, Reserve Bank of India for a period of three years from 11.12.2024,” a note issued by the Department of Personnel & Training, Government of India read.

Sanjay Malhotra, who will be the 26th Governor of the country’s central bank, is a 1990 batch Indian Administrative Service (IAS) Officer from the Rajasthan Cadre. A graduate in Computer Science from IIT Kanpur, he also holds a master’s degree in Public Policy from the Princeton University, US.

During his career, Malhotra has served across various sectors like finance, taxation, power, information technology and mines.
