The energy index fell by 2.1 per cent over the month after falling by 5 per cent in August, as the gasoline index declined, but the natural gas and electricity indices increased.
The index for all items less food and energy rose by 0.6 per cent in the month, as it did in August.
Indices that declined in the month included those for apparel and communication.
The all items index rose by 8.3 per cent for the period ending August.
The gasoline index fell by 4.9 per cent over the month following a 10.6-per cent decrease in August. Before seasonal adjustment, gasoline prices fell by 5.6 per cent in September.
However, the index for natural gas increased by 2.9 per cent in September after rising by 3.5 per cent in August. The electricity index also increased over the month, rising by 0.4 per cent.
The energy index rose by 19.8 per cent over the past 12 months. The gasoline index increased by 18.2 percent over the span and the fuel oil index rose by 58.1 percent. The index for electricity rose by 15.5 per cent over the last 12 months, and the index for natural gas increased by 33.1 per cent, BLS said.
