The US consumer price index for all urban consumers (CPI-U) increased by 0.5 per cent on a seasonally-adjusted basis in January this year after rising by 0.4 per cent in December, according to the Bureau of Labour Statistics (BLS).

Over the last 12 months, the all items index increased by 3 per cent before seasonal adjustment in January after rising by 2.9 per cent over the 12 months ending December.

The energy index rose by 1.1 per cent over the month by 1 per cent for the 12 months ending January.

The index for all items less food and energy rose by 0.4 per cent in January.

The indices for apparel (minus 1.4 per cent) and household furnishings were among the few major indices that decreased in January, a BLS release said.
