The US Senate, the upper house of the US Congress, recently passed a resolution to thwart President Donald Trump’s ability to impose tariffs on Canada.

Passed by a 51-48 tally with four Republicans and all Democrats in support, the resolution is expected to end Trump’s emergency declaration on fentanyl trafficking that underpins tariffs on Canada.

The Senate’s legislation has little chance of passing the Republican Party-controlled lower house, the House of Representatives, and being signed by Trump, as per media reports.

The four Republican senators who voted in favour of the resolution are Lisa Murkowski of Alaska, Susan Collins of Maine, Mitch McConnell of Kentucky and Rand Paul of Kentucky.

“As I have always warned, tariffs are bad policy, and trade wars with our partners hurt working people most,” McConnell said in a statement following the vote.
