Sri Lanka reduced its electricity tariff with effect from July 16 after the Public Utilities Commission of Sri Lanka (PUCSL) approved a reduction of electricity tariffs by 22.5 per cent across the board.

This was the second revision of power tariffs this year, a PUCSL release said.

The price cut is expected to bring some relief to the consumers in the island nation which is making efforts to revive its economy after it faced its worst ever economic crisis.

The tariffs have been reduced by 25 per cent for consumers who consume less than 30 units of electricity in the domestic sector. The unit price they pay will now be reduced from SLR 8 to SLR 6.

The bills of consumers with monthly power consumption between 61 and 90 units will get reduced by 55 per cent, and the unit price for that category has been reduced from SLR 20 to SLR 9, PUCSL chairman Manjula Fernando said.

The revision includes a 33 per cent reduction for small industries during daytime.
