  • Trump has announced a 25 per cent tariff and additional penalty on Indian imports starting August 1, citing India's high tariffs, strict non-monetary trade barriers, and strong energy and defence ties with Russia.
  • He criticised India for being Russia's top energy buyer and military customer, stating these actions contradict global efforts to stop the war in Ukraine.
US President Donald Trump has announced that Indian imports will face a 25 per cent tariff plus an additional penalty starting August 1, citing high tariff barriers, non-monetary trade restrictions, and India’s continued defence and energy ties with Russia.

“India’s tariffs are among the highest in the world, and their non-monetary trade barriers are the most strenuous and obnoxious of any country,” Trump wrote on Truth Social today. He also criticised India’s longstanding dependence on Russian military equipment and energy imports, stating this goes against global efforts to pressure Moscow to end the war in Ukraine.

The move signals a sharp escalation in trade tensions between the US and India, with Trump stating that despite friendly ties, "we have done relatively little business with them over the years" due to such hurdles.

This announcement comes ahead of a critical August 1 deadline previously mentioned by the US administration for tariff adjustments on countries without bilateral trade deals.
