  • The United Kingdom government has pledged £160 million to assist developing nations in combating climate change.
  • The funds will be allocated to four global programmes, focusing on green technology development and emissions reduction.
  • This contribution is part of the UK's £11.6 billion commitment to international climate finance for 2021-2026.
The UK government has announced a new funding package of £160 million to assist developing countries in their fight against climate change. The announcement was made by energy minister Graham Stuart at the UN Climate Ambitions Summit in New York.

The £160 million will be allocated to four global programmes, including £100 million for the Mitigation Action Facility and £55 million for the Clean Energy Innovation Facility.

The financial aid aims to accelerate the development and deployment of green technologies in these countries, helping reduce emissions and drive down costs. The funding comes as part of the UK’s commitment to spend £11.6 billion on international climate finance between 2021-2022 and 2025-2026, the government of UK said in a media release.

Secretary of state for energy security and net zero, Claire Coutinho, emphasised that while the UK accounts for only 1 per cent of global emissions, collective action is crucial. "The funding will help decarbonise key industrial sectors in the developing world, support new industries, and create long-term jobs," she said.
