“We will then bring legislation to Parliament to implement the deal,” he said on the United Kingdom’s relationship with the EU at a recent event.
“We’ll get that done by 2027, so businesses and consumers see the tangible impacts as soon as possible,” he said.
British exports are down by nearly 20 per cent since 2019, and since 2021, over 16,000 UK businesses have completely stopped exporting to the EU, he noted.
“Behind every number and statistic is a British business, a British entrepreneur, a British start-up. Paying the price. Companies big and small are crying out for change. For practical help to bring down bills so they make goods cheaper for the public,” he added.
“Making trade with the EU quicker, cheaper and simpler is crucial to boosting economic growth in the years ahead,” said the British Chambers of Commerce (BCC), reacting to the speech.
“A permanent deal with the EU can’t come soon enough for UK firms. In the talks ahead ministers must deliver a deal that truly unburdens business and cuts costs. Consumers will then reap the benefits in their shopping baskets,” BCC head of trade policy William Bain said in a statement.
