  • US GDP growth for 2024 is forecast to rise to 2.2 per cent, a significant increase from the earlier 1.3 per cent prediction.
  • This optimism stems from expected improvements in personal and government spending, as well as investment.
  • Experts anticipate lower interest rates by the second quarter, alongside a soft landing with reduced inflation and unemployment.
US’ inflation-adjusted gross domestic product (GDP) is expected to rise by 2.2 per cent in 2024, a notable increase from the 1.3 per cent forecast in December, according to the National Association for Business Economics (NABE) Outlook Survey. This optimistic revision is attributed to anticipated improvements in key sectors such as personal consumption expenditures and government consumption expenditures, and gross investment.

The survey, which reflects the consensus among economic experts, suggests a robust economic outlook for the coming year. Panellists attribute the revised growth forecast to a range of factors, including a more favourable investment climate and increased consumer spending. Additionally, most NABE panellists are predicting that the Federal Reserve’s Federal Open Market Committee will begin to cut interest rates in the second quarter of 2024.

In a comparison with the Federal Reserve's December economic projections, the NABE panellists are more optimistic, forecasting stronger economic growth, lower inflation, and reduced unemployment rates. This positive outlook is shared by over three-quarters of the panellists, who believe that the US economy will achieve a soft landing in 2024, as per the survey.
