The tariffs, which implement an executive order signed by President Donald Trump on August 6, will apply to any Indian goods that arrive for use or are taken out of warehouses after the deadline.
Earlier this month, Trump slapped an additional 25-per cent tariff on India, raising the overall levy to 50 per cent on imports from India, as a penalty for New Delhi's continued purchase of Russian oil.
Directing US agencies to respond to ‘threats’ from Russia, the CBP notice said India is being targeted as part of that policy.
Trump has indicated that he could impose additional tariffs on countries trading with Russia or impose additional sanctions on Moscow if a deal fails to materialise. He warned of ‘very big consequences’ in the coming weeks if no progress is made.
The United States is yet to impose similar tough measures on other major purchasers of Russian oil like China.
