The tariffs, announced earlier this month and implemented just after Wednesday midnight in Washington, risk inflicting severe damage on India’s $87.3 billion exports to the US.
Trump, who has sharply raised tariffs on several countries since returning to the White House, argued India’s purchases of discounted Russian oil indirectly support Moscow’s war in Ukraine. The decision comes after an earlier 25 per cent levy was imposed, now doubled to 50 per cent.
India’s Ministry of External Affairs had rejected the move as unfair, unjustified and unreasonable.
The tariffs place India in the same bracket as Brazil and China, which already face 50 per cent duties on several exports to the US.
