The olefin industry started relatively late in the 1970s in China, but developed rapidly during the Eleventh Five Year Plan period.

After nearly 40 years of development, China surpassed Japan to become the world’s second largest ethylene producer, next only to the US.

With annual production of about 15 million tons at the end of Eleventh Five Year Plan, China accounts for about 10 percent of world ethylene production and about 30 percent of Asian production.

China now plans to increase its annual ethylene production capacity by 12 million tons to 27 million tons by 2015, by developing its ethylene production industry at a rapid pace.
